If you’re looking for an easy care houseplant, Then a Tillandsia or Air Plant may be for you!
Originating from Central and South America, Air Plants absorb moisture & nutrients through their leaves, requiring just air, light and water to live.
Air plants need constant air circulation and some moisture. In Spring and Summer you can mist daily, reducing to twice a week in Autumn and Winter. You can also water using the ‘bathing method’ where the Air Plants are ‘dunked’ in a bowl of water once a week. If you chose this method, you must shake off the water as Air Plants should not sit in water. Although they like it light and bright, direct sunlight is not advisable with partial shade preferable.
Displayed on a bookshelf, sideboard, in a shell or glass terrarium they make an great green feature for your home
There are over 550 species of Tillandsia and we usually have a couple of varieties in stock at any time, so please note style of plant will vary (see images).
Care for Tillandsias:
- Tillandsias DO have to be watered, they live “in” air, not “on” air. They take all water and nutrients through their leaves.
- Tillandsias are NOT toxic to animals, your pet will survive a nibble, but the plant might not
- Do NOT place the Tillandias in direct sunlight
- Trim away brown, bent or damaged leaves. This will not hurt the plant.
